While the forces of good usually win, victory tends to involve great sacrifice. Different cultures have different spells and magical systems, including dark magic. Unavoidably, the price is very heavy for the forces of good and redemption is very difficult for those who choose the path of dark magic. Polytheistic Gods wander the earth and carry some power, but it is generally weak. They can only gain more power based upon the number and extent of faith of their devotees. Most people are of the Christian Faith with their belief in the power of a Biblical God hence the Seven Deadly Sin categories.
